Play in time, all the time

by Mike Outram on 2012/08/25

Ah, life…

Many months ago I was supposed to be finishing a notebook. There are three pages left, and for some reason, I stopped. And when you stop, terrible things happen: you start thinking/dawdling. Nothing becomes something, and on, and on… So without a second thought, let’s just finish the thing over the weekend, and then that’s another line drawn in the sand. My sand, I know.

So, I recently taught on a Summer School. I got to hear Dave Newton play a solo version of Stompin’ at the Savoy that was very inspiring. He’s very good at music. Also, Alan Barnes came to do a talk, and that was great, too. He left me with many things to think about. One neatly articulated thing was, ‘Play in time – all the time’. And that means exactly that. You can write it out in ALL CAPS, or add ‘loser’ to the end of it. It doesn’t really matter, so long as you do it.

Thanks for these ECs, Mike, both of which are helpfull. I have a half dozen or so new tunes to write down and transpose for a gig on the 5th and am prevaricating as usual but the first EC will help motivate me and the second will help with solo guitar gigs.
