Hey Paul,

That’s my favourite Holdsworth solo. Paul Stacey played it for me a while ago. It’s not bad at all. :) The intro bit I could leave though. I think it was composed around Chad’s drum part which was an improvisation. Holdsworth built the composition, which is just a massive guitar solo!, around that.

Re: Oliver Cazal – he’s the pianist; the music is by Poulenc.

I’m not familiar with any of Malcolm Arnold’s music. Care to offer a recommendation? Thanks for those other suggestions. I love that version of I’m a Believer, and I’m a huge fan of Zappa. New playlist tomorrow!

cheers mike – malcolm arnold – where to start? are you a film buff??? try the belles of st trinians original version or hobsons choice or whistle down the wind. try any of his symphonies; they are a disparate lot – nos 2, 4 and 5 are the most approachable – most recordings are ok but arnolds conducting of his own work is almost always revelatory. the fantasy for cello….. sea shanties…… harmonica concerto… english dances suite one….. cornish dances…. variations on a ukranian folk song (yes my darling daughter was ripped off from the same source!) more suggestions to follow….
poulenc was an interesting chap and often musically evasive to my ears……
more guitar greats; john fahey ; django rheinhardt ; ollie halsall ie i didnt feel lonely til i thought of you (k ayers), most patto albums especially roll em smoke em put another line out ( he played vibes and piano on the patto albums and considering his skill as a guitarist his playing on these instruments amazes me); a. holdsworth solo on metal fatigue track and gong’s gazeuse album and many others; brains gone will compile part three soon. keep well mike

part three; martin carthy; bill connors with return to forever a. o. ; pat martino on his albums joyous lake and we’ll be together again; mike walker – heard him on a bbc broadcast ca 8 years ago and was staggered!!! – been hunting for his recordings ever since; u srinivas all his stuff is great i particularly enjoy his cd on realworld ;brian godding – used to love a solo from overt’yer on solid gold cadillac’s brain damage album but now more likely to listen to him on full monte albums or mike westbrook’s momumental london bridge is broken down; john ethridge on his cd ash was a fave; vernon reid is diverting on the first two and last track on his album mistaken. could be more soon w t s……

Hi Paul. The Dorking gig was great; nice to play with Mark Lockheart. Haven’t really played with him before; he’s fantastic. I might be at the Ealing gig. Cheers for letting me know. (and all this stuff to check out!) M

looks like an amataur or semi pro orchestra – malcolm arnold loved writing for non professionals and he would have enjoyed the gig on oct 10. he was crucified for most his career for writing ‘populist’ music – probably didnt help his inherent mental illness. the gig on 10/10 includes ‘carribean percussion’ possibly as a response to the brixton riots – a brave move yet the elitist critics found it incomprehensible.
mark lockheart is one of my fave tenor players- i usually prefer the alto- so it was a pity the gig was so far away. did the audience appear to enjoy the music mike?
hope the great guitarists suggestions is an enjoyable voyage of discovery mike – let me know if you need any clarification. ive listened seriously for over 40 years so my tastes have had time to distill. keep well – see you with sebastiaan
