Inspired by ’1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die’.

2557416716_881a2919ecStuck for something to listen to? Try this.

I have a book by Tom Moon called ‘1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die‘ and it has been sitting on my shelf for a good while now, taunting me with it’s implied ’1000 recordings you’ll never hear because you can’t be arsed to go to a record shop to buy them’. Anyway,  I’ve been meaning to make a Spotify playlist to go with the book for ages so here, nudged on by this chap, it is.

Here’s the first playlist: Inspired by ’1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die’. 01-20. I’ll be going through the book and putting the playlists on a Posterous site. Here’s the URL: http://1000recordings.posterous.com and you can click on the subscribe link on that page to have the playlist and Spotify link delivered straight to your e-mail inbox.

I guess the usefulness of this is just to have some directed listening that’s full of stuff I wouldn’t normally hear; to open my mind a bit; force me into hearing something new.

So 20 albums a week for around a year should do it. We’ll see how we get on. It would be very cool to look back after a year having heard all that music that otherwise wouldn’t have been discovered. Might be interesting…

Yeah, 3 months now. sleepless nights all over again :) The Ethiopian stuff is awesome, as is ABBA. I did a workshop once with Muhal Richard Abrams. We were all instructed to play rhythm changes in different keys. He’d point and shout ‘You! rhythm changes, E’ and away you’d go. Eventually the entire band was playing in different places, in different keys and different speeds. Have to say it was rubbish :) But, I just heard Cage’s 4’33” and got a lot from that. always good to be pushed around a bit by music and expectations. Enjoy the playlists. M

20 new albums in a week! That’s a challenge in itself :)

Yeah, I know. But you can always just scan through it. Check the book out too, it’s great.
